3.74 Degrees of Facebook Separation

A study carried out in May suggests that there are an average 3.74 degrees of separation between any two Facebook users.

The number of degrees corresponds to the number of users in a friendship chain excepting the ones at the end. The study was carried out on all active members of the social networking site where an active member is defined as one who has logged on at least once in the past 28 days. 99.6% of all user pairs were found to be separated by five degrees and 92% through four degrees, with the result averaging 3.74.

The experiment is based on Karinthy's historical idea which suggests that there are six degrees of separation between any two people in the world.
