Researchers from the Ohio State University found that squinting at a computer screen can halve the number of times a person can blink!!
The above phenomenon leads to dry eyes. The team hooked electrodes to the eyelids of ten volunteers to track the muscle activity involved in both squinting and blinking. Blink rates were 15 blinks per minute for relaxed eyes while 7.5 for squinted ones.
Andrew Hogan of the Austrailian Optometrisits Association says that concentrating and squinting to reduce glare will tend to make you blink less. Air conditioners can also dry eyes.
The study further explains that while reading a book one's eyes do get to relax/blink because of the page-turning necessity but screens allow us no respite! Hogan advises taking regular breaks ."Look out of the window at different distances and around the room so that your focus is not just locked on the monitor".
