With 43 cases of polio being reported this year compared to last year’s 11, polio in Nigeria has increased four times with the virus spreading to neighbouring countries as well. However, the transmission is still very low “in a country as large as Nigeria with almost 50m children under five”, says Thomas Moran, a World Health Organization official. WHO has been carrying out vaccination campaigns to thwart the spread of the disease.
Nigeria is one of the four countries where polio poses as a major health risk along with Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
