Bertha Jones, of Woodward, lowa , has always said hard work, no smoking and drinking are what have kept her alive for 103 years. As a farm wife, she cultivated a large garden, took care of the farm stock, butchered meat, canned vegetables and fruits and tended to a hundred other chores around the homestead. That HARD WORK may have helped offset her penchant for pork, creamery products and the like-concentrated sources of energy when the body has plenty of good uses for those calories.
Throughout her life, Bertha's good health has kept her in the best location for long life-far away from doctor's office. And she never let stress or anger attack her system. Her elixir for that: Whenever problems arose , Bertha would remember , "Through faith, we can handle anything."
Excerpt from the book, "100 ways to live to 100", published in 2000
