Africa's Afar Depression

The Afar Triangle (also called the Afar Depression or the Danakil Depression) is a geological depression in Africa overlaps parts of some regions and the entire Afar Region of Ethiopia .It is caused by the Afar Triple Junction which is part of the Great Rift Valley. Afar is well known as one of the cradles of hominids, containing the Middle Awash, site of many fossil hominid discoveries such as Ardi, (Ardipithecus ramidus); the Gona (Gawis cranium), site of the world's oldest stone tools; and Hadar, site of Lucy, the fossilized specimen of Australopithecus afarensis. The picture above shows how Sulfur and algae turn hot springs into pools of living color in the Triangle. It is most probably illustrating tha Awash River as it is the only river that flows into the Afar Triangle, according to Wikipedia. The water is condensation from hot gases rising from magma chambers.(a large underground pool of molten rock found beneath the surface of the Earth that may cause severe volcanic eruptions). As the water evaporates, salts and minerals form a vivid crust.
