Drogba guides Chelsea forward as they overcame Valencia 3-0 |
Dieder Drogba struck twice as Chelsea confirmed their place in the last 16 for the ninth successive year. Valencia enjoyed plenty of possession but never could score.
Just three minutes into the match Didier Drogba fired across Diego Alves into the bottom right-hand corner. Ramires (Chelsea) scored on Drogba's pass to give the blues breathing space.
Valencia showed intent and began demonstrating the class in their midst but struggled to break through. The Ivorian again struck late to seal their place in the last 16.
Eren Derdiyok scored on the 79th minute to draw against Genk 1-1 as Leverkusen remained at second place in Group E, behind Chelsea, to qualify for the next round.
Josep Guardiola left out 14 first-team regulars and demonstrated the health of their youth system with a powerful and clear-cut 4-0 defeat of FC BATE Borisov. The European champions equalled the group stage record of 20 goals.
Barcelona was amazing with their possession as Sergi Roberto calmly scored the opening goal in the first half before Montoya scored on the 60th minute - their first goals in the Champions league, while Pedro struck twice.
Plzen scored two late goals and equalised with AC Milan after Robinho and Pato scored in successive minutes just two minutes into the 2nd half. Both AC Milan and Barcelona had earlier qualified to the last 16 from group H.
Olympiacos FC defeated Group F winners Arsenal 3-1 but bowed out of the UEFA Champions League as Marsielle came from behind - scoring two late goals - to beat Dortsmund 3-2, securing their place ahead of Olympiacos to qualify for the knock-out stage.
FC Shakhtar Donetsk beat APOEL FC 2-0 but remained at the bottom of Group G, while APOEL FC suffered from their first defeat in the group stage as they qualify to the next round. Zenit also went to the knockout stage after their match against Porto ended in a goal less draw.
