Delhi's hundred years as Indian capital

Delhi celebrates to mark its 100 years as the Indian capital.

The city became the capital on 12 December 1911 while still under the British Raj, when Emperor George V announced the decision to move the capital from Calcutta to Delhi.

The festivities are expected to begin in January, continuing for the rest of the year. An exhibition of photographs marking the city's history has already been opened with a book called 'Red Fort to Raisana' set to be released.

Many Indians however, find the idea as 'elitist' believing that the celebrations are "not connected to the needs of the people", according to one Kuldip Singh, an architect and town planner, as he expressed his views to The Hindu newspaper.
