DEVIL FOUND IN ITALIAN FRESCO

An Italian art historian, Chiara Frugon working on the restoration of St Francis Basilica in Assisi has discovered the figure of a devil hidden in the details of clouds in a fresco painted by Giotto in the 13th century.

It shows a profile of a figure smirking with a hooked nose, and has dark horns hidden among the clouds in the panel of the scene depicting the death of St Francis. And it only becomes visible in a close-up photography.

Sergio Fusetti, the Chief restorer of the basilica said that the master may have painted it to spite someone he knew by portraying him as a devil in the painting.
