The former Brazil captain Sócrates has died at the age of 57. Socrates was interned with food poisoning and had been on a life support machine in the Albert Einstein Israeli Hospital in Sao Paulo since Thursday.
Socrates - also a doctor - captained for Brazil at the 1982 and also played at the 1986 World Cup. He sprang to fame in early 1980s and was a great midfielder along with the midfielder Zico.
Socrates won 60 caps for Brazil, scoring 22 goals. In 2004 he famously came out of retirement at the age of 50 to make a one-off substitute appearance for English lower-league side Garforth Town.
His club career included spells at Botafogo, Corinthians, Fiorentina, Flamengo and Santos.
