Using X-ray scanning, experts have found an unfinished Rembrandt self-portrait hidden under another painting by the Dutch master called 'Old Man with a Beard' .
The self-portrait has key similarities with other known works of Rembrandt, says art historian Ernst van de Wetering, who is heading the Rembrandt Research Project.
The portrait was discovered after an X-ray scan that detected different layers of pigment present in the painting revealing various views of the image. This was carried out at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York and the ESRF light source in Grenoble, France.
