"You represent one of the most important motive forces for change in today's world, the struggle for human rights in general and the struggle of women for equality and peace in particular," said Thorbjorn Jagland, Chairman Norwegian Nobel Committee, while congratulating the three Prize-winners.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the Liberian president, Leymah Gbowee, the Liberian peace activist and Tawakul Karman, the pro-democracy campaigner from Yemen, jointly won the award this year. They were presented with a gold medal and diploma each with a prize money of $1.5 million to be shared between them.

The three women are credited for using non-violent means to ensure the safety of women and their rights for participation in bringing peace to their regions.
