Libyans celebrate their first independence anniversary in 42 years.
The country came into being as the United Libyan Kingdom under King Idris on 24 December 1951. After Col. Gaddafi's military coup in 1969 however, the country was only allowed to mark the date of his power seizure, with many Libyans remaining unaware of the importance of December 24.
The day is going to be marked by a march from the Martyrs Square to what was formerly the Royal Palace.
