Czech Leader And Playwright Havel Dies

Czech Republic's first president after the Velvet Revolution had died aged 75.

Vaclav Havel, Czech leader and playwright, died Sunday morning after suffering from prolonged illness.

A former heavy smoker, Havel had part of a lung removed during surgery for cancer.

While under his rule, Czechoslovakia first saw the light of democracy, later on splitting peacefully into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Havel's fame however dates back to the 1970s when he first surfaced as a dissident playwright through his involvement with the human rights manifesto Charter 77.
