Australia held an overall lead of 230 runs , reaching 179-8 in their second innings, at stumps on day three of the 1st Test match.
A 115-run stand for the 5th wicket between Ricky Ponting (60) and Michael Hussey (79*) lifted Australia to a descent score after their top order collapsed. Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma set Australia reeling on (27-4). After Ricky Ponting departed for the 5th wicket on 142, wickets again started to fell quickly but Hussey still remains on the pitch.
Earlier India continued their 1st innings in the morning in strong position but after Hilfenhaus bowled Dravid on the 2nd ball of the day the remaining batsmen collapsed on Australian fast bowlers. Including Tendulkar's wicket, the previous day, India lost last 8 wickets for 68 to lag 51 runs short of Australia's 333. Hilfenhaus claimed 5 wickets.
