Student Admits Hacking Facebook

A software development student from York confesses to have hacked the social networking site in a court hearing.

The action by Glenn Mangham, 26, triggered visible alarm amongst various American authorities including the FBI, which started fearing an industrial espionage.

According to the prosecutor Sandip Patel, the action "required considerable expertise", including downloading his own programmes on to the site's servers and saving "highly intellectual property" on an external  drive therefore enabling offline access.

Mangham's attorney maintains that his client is an "ethical hacker", who intended to use the attack to show Facebook its vulnerabilities as done previously with Yahoo.

The attack was discovered during a system check up by Facebook.
