Compared to their counterparts in developing countries, businesses in the West have been slower in adopting online social networking.
According to a survey by KPMG, businesses in countries such as China, Brazil and India are 20-30% more likely to use sites such as Facebook than those in developed countries like the UK.
Online social media is a major tool used by emerging markets since it provides "a relatively low-cost opportunity to leapfrog the competition in developed markets," says Tudor Aw, head of technology at KPMG, Europe.
The report establishes that 70% of firms now use online social media.
