In making predictions about the future one has to make a judgement about the ability of the established Industrial world to adapt. One of the great lessons of the last quarter of the present century was that the 'old' industrial world, North America and Europe, had something to learn, often painfully, from the industrial processes developed in the new, in particular from Japan. One of the great issues of the first quarter of the next century will be whether countries can learn from each other not just how to make their industries efficient but how to make their whole societies more efficient.
