Europe's biggest carmaker, Volkswagen, sells a record 5.1 million cars in 2011.
The company found its biggest markets in Europe and China, selling 1.72 million cars in each.
Excepting South America, where sales rose by just 2.2%, the company witnessed strong growth across all of its regions.
Cars such as Passat, Beetle and Jetta made "an excellent start in difficult market conditions", with their latest models.
The Group also owns subsidiary brands such as Lamborghini, Bugatti and Bentley, Audi, Skoda and Seat.
