China faces a cultural heritage loss

The country's first heritage census in more than twenty years concludes to find a loss of about 44,000 ruins and other ancient cultural sites.

Economic construction is the major factor behind the relics' disappearance, says Liu Xiahoe, deputy director of the survey.

More than 3500 sites have been lost in the Shaanxi province, the home of the terracotta warriors.

The Great Wall of China is not protected either.

"...the iconic Great Wall of China has been threatened by erosion and unauthorised development, as conservation rules are flouted by hikers and exploited by local villagers who charge their own admission fees.

Two years ago a Qin Dynasty part of the Great Wall was said to have been damaged by miners who knocked holes in it while prospecting for gold." (BBC News)
