Comedian Leno's comment angers Sikhs

Comment made by the US comedian Jay Leno on the Golden Temple of Amritsar, the holiest Sikh shrine, angers Sikhs.

Indian authorities condemned a skit by Leno showing the Temple as the "summer home of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney," reports the BBC. Many Sikhs have found the Temple's depiction as a home for the rich highly objectionable.

Indian Minister for Overseas Affairs said: "The Golden Temple is the Sikh community's most sacred place... The American government should also look at this kind of thing.

Freedom does not mean hurting the sentiments of others... This is not acceptable to us and we take a very strong objection for such a display."

The US Sikh community has signed an online petition accusing Leno of passing derogatory remarks on Sikhs before.
