British physicist and cosmologist, Professor Stephen Hawking, misses a symposium marking his 70th birthday due to ill health.
Prof Hawking, who was discharged from hospital on Friday, will follow the symposium entitled The State of the Universe via webcast. His recorded address - A Brief History of Mine - will be played there in his absence.
A three-day conference held in honour of the theoretical physicist in the auditorium at Cambridge University, attracted leading scientists and members of the public, all expecting to see him there despite ill health. Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, vice-chancellor of Cambridge University, however informed the event about Prof Hawking's inability to attend and wished him a very happy birthday.
