Last of 2011 - 200,000 jobs created by US economy

With analysts forecasting an increase of 150,000, the US economy created 200,000 jobs in the month of December.


The unemployment rate reached its lowest ebb in nearly three years, dropping to 8.5%.  Retail, transportation, warehousing, healthcare and manufacturing saw a large increase in jobs.


About 1.6 million jobs were created in 2011 as a whole, the highest since 2006.


Stats also show an increase in employment in the private sector, rising by 212,000 in December and by 1.9 million over the year.


Employment in the public sector however was down by 280,000 over the year, with almost no change in December.
