What goes around comes around, very stereotypical I know, but extremely pertinent to the issue at hand - our day-to-day matters!
Originally, it is a lowness of one's character, digging up dirt for others (intentionally). Eventually however, it is a ' do unto others before they do unto you ' case.
What one does sure has consequences, and this is not for supernatural-believers only. History repeats, the world unfurls, and we see... we see the consequences that people face, the heavy weight of their own actions reflecting through them.
What happens next? Many-a-time there is remorse. A few of the times we see an effort to make it all well again. Alas, that is not always successful. So, a word of caution my friends, mind your own business!
