Physical activity linked to better academic performance

A Dutch review of 14 studies involving more than 12,000 children, finds strong evidence of a link between physical activity and better academic performance at school.

This may be due to better blood circulation and increased oxygen flow towards the brain after exercise, the research said.

Physical activity was also more likely to improve mood and reduce stress, thereby leading the children towards exhibiting better behaviour in the classroom.

"Children who learn to participate in sport also learn to obey rules. This may mean they are more disciplined and able to concentrate better during lessons," said one researcher, Dr. Amika Singh.

The authors of the study said more accurate and reliable measurement instruments were needed for better examination of the link.
