Parenting, and what lies at stake!

By Sarah Mahmood

Continuing with the parent-kid relationship, today's a bit of advice for all the parents out there (excuse the liberty since I'm no parent).

Parents today need to be more 'parental' than dictators. You don't trust your kid. Make a behind-the-back raid on their room, check their cellphones, their diaries, keeping a visible tab on all their friends and activities and whoa! your kid's safe.

No sir, that's not how the situation stands. Tact is what is missing. Sure, trusting the kid blindly is like living in a fool's paradise. If you do that, then I am really not sure about your own mental maturity. However, there sure can be a better way of doing the same thing without giving your kid the knowledge that they are being mistrusted. And it is not only about a lack of trust.

Kids will be kids: immature, easily influenced human beings. But what your action does to them is a damage that extends far beyond their childhood. Their personality development lies at stake. The confidence that they must exhibit as successful human beings is lost to your tactless ways of treating them.

Thus, a word of caution: give your kids the support, the trust and the confidence that they can derive their strengths from. Happy parenting!
