Rock of Ages (2012)

Rock of Ages is an upcoming film based on a book and adapted play by Chris D’Arienzo. The music of the film is taken from popular 80′s music, with bands such as Journey, Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, and REO Speedwagon. The film follows a couple who fall in love at a Sunset Strip rock club but are torn apart by their rock n’ roll lifestyle.

It is being directed by Adam Shankman, who directed Bedtime Stories, Hairspray, and The Wedding Planner. I guess it’s good that he directed Hairspray, since that was another musical, but the other work does not inspire confidence.

The film stars Julianne Hough as Sherrie Christian (the waitress), Diego Boneta as Drew Boley, Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, Russell Brand as Lonny Barnett (the narrator of the story), Alec Baldwin as Dennis Dupree, Bryan Cranston as Mike Whitmore (The Mayor of Los Angeles), Catherine Zeta-Jones as Patricia Whitmore, Kevin Nash as Stacee Jaxx's body guard and Mary J. Blige as Justice Charlier (the owner of The Venus Club).

Originally scheduled to enter production in the Summer of 2010 for a 2011 release, it is now under production since May 2011 and is scheduled for a June 1, 2012 release.
