Rushdie 'sad for India'

Author Salman Rushdie says he is "sad for India" after his address to an Indian literary festival was cancelled due to security reasons.

The planned address that was to be delivered via a video-link had to be cancelled following protests and threats by Muslim activists.

He said that such religious extremism was a hindrance to freedom of ideas and blamed the government for not doing enough to prevent it.

"I have a lot of personal disappointment but the overwhelming feeling is disappointment on behalf of India - a country I have loved all my life and whose long-term commitment to liberty and secularism I have praised all my life," said Rushdie.

Mr. Rushdie's address was organized after he withdrew from attending the festival fearing an assassination attempt.
