About 66% of 1.9 million Croatian voters voted Yes to EU


Croatian citizens today supported Croatia's accession to the European Union. The referendum was 66.24 percent of voters, against 33.16 per cent. The referendum marked by low turnout.
For Croatia's EU accession was 66.24 percent or about 1.3 million voters, against 33.16 percent or about 650,000.
The referendum was characterized with a small turnout and the vote total of 43.58 percent or about 1.9 million voters of 4.3.
For the success of the referendum was needed more than 50 percent of the citizens who voted at the polls to support the EU accession. The threshold is reached and Croatia is to become the 28th country to join the EU on July 1, 2013th, after confirmation by all other EU member states.
Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic is in a short speech after the announcement of the results congratulated citizens who supported the historic entry into the EU. He added that it is historic decisions.
Milanovic also said he was surprised by the such a low voter turnout.
"I do not feel bitter, but I expected a larger turnout," Milanovic said adding that it is obvious that people are "clearly fatigued" and would be better for all that the turnout was higher.
