"I was born at Portsmouth, an English seaport town, principally remarkable for mud, jews and sailors." -Charles Dickens
Portsmouth is preparing a series of activities marking Dickens' 200 years. The city appears only once in the author's works - the novel, Nicholas Nickleby.
The events start on Tuesday and include school pupil processions as well as public readings. Plans of erecting the author's statue are in place despite his will requesting that no statues or monuments be built after his death.
