An insight into a battery-less future!

The need for conventional batteries might just be eliminated as researchers at the University of Bedfordshire develop a new system using radio waves as power.

The system, believed to be the first of its kind, has been developed by Prof Ben Allen from the Institute for Wireless Research.

It uses medium wave frequencies as the power source in small gadgets like remote controls. The system utilizes the waste energy of these waves theoretically producing power.

"The emerging area of power harvesting technology promises to reduce our reliance on conventional batteries," says Dr. Allen.

"It's a really exciting way of taking power from other sources than what we would normally think of."

Dr. Allen and his team have applied for a patent to secure exclusive rights to the technique.

"Power harvesting," according to Prof Allen, "has a really important part in our future because, just in this country, we dispose of somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 tonnes of batteries in landfill sites every single year - that is toxic chemicals going into the ground."
