South Africa to issue Mandela notes

Nelson Mandela is soon to appear on South African banknotes.

President Jacob Zuma described the decision to issue banknotes bearing Mandela's image as a "humble gesture" of "deep gratitude" towards the country's first black president.

"With this humble gesture, we are expressing our deep gratitude as the South African people, to a life spent in service of the people of this country and in the cause of humanity worldwide," he said.

Mandela, who is now 93, won the Nobel Peace Prize for campaigning against the rule of the white minority and was subsequently elected the president.

He spent 27 years in prison and was released on 11 February 1990.
