US: First nuclear reactors approved after long time

First nuclear reactors since 1978 are approved by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The reactors will be built by Southern Co at an existing Georgia plant for the first time since 1978, a year before the occurrence of the Three Mile Island accident.

Chairman Gregory Jaczko however, has voiced concerns saying that approval of such plants comes with some sort of "binding commitment" for the safety plans to be intact before the plants start functioning.

In an effort to reduce financing costs, the government is offering $8.3bn in federal loan guarantees to Southern and its partners.
