Google rebrands

Google has renamed its app store Android Market to Google Play. On Apple side launch of the next version of the iPad was due today.

The revamp will see all of the categories in the virtual store change names too. Music, videos and books apps, will becoming Play Music, Play Movies and Play Books.

The new look store is available as part of the latest Android 2.2 mobile update.Google Play is available on mobile, computers, laptops and Chromebooks. It allows users to buy a piece of content and access it on any device.

The repositioning of the brand to include the word Google, is being deemed a clever move by technology experts.

Rich Trenholm, the news editor of technology site CNET UK, wrote: “This [rebrand] took me by surprise, but it's a smart move.

“As enormously popular as Android phones are, Google is still a word that's far more recognisable to ordinary folk…Tech-savvy phone fans may grasp the concept of Android, but that doesn't mean friends, family and other[s] do. Mobile phones are as mainstream as it gets these days, so anything Google can do to brand its offerings as simple and unified and understandable, in words of one syllable, is going to help its cause.”
