Recycling of Marks & Spencer coat hangers raises £370,000 for UNICEF

Customers of Marks & Spencer have helped raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for UNICEF by recycling 100 million coat hangers.

Recycling hangers helps the environment and saves money, UNICEF say, and since the partnership with M&S began in July 2011, the initiative raised £370,000 for the organisation. M&S donates 50p for every £1 saved from hanger recycling to UNICEF.

The money funds a critical new project to provide basics such as clean water, education and healthcare for vulnerable children in the Mymensingh and Dhaka regions of Bangladesh.

"We're delighted this scheme is working so well," said Kate Bostock, Executive Director of Clothing and Home at M&S. "It's simple, but hugely effective. For every customer that doesn't take a hanger, the environment benefits and one of the world's leading charities benefits. It's now up to us to say a big thank you to our customers and work on ways to make it even more engaging so we can raise more money and make a huge difference."
