THE GRAND NEOBIOLOGICAL FUTURE

Our world is precariously poised. We have a glorious capability of destroying each other many times over but nanoseconds govern. So a long term beyond a few years is outright foolish. 

So here is a technology view of the year 2020. It is a common refrain that change is speeding up. I beg to differ. For example the difference between my grandfather's world and my father's world was profound.  My grandfather had no TV news, no motor car, no antibiotics, no telephone, no power tools. His typical day was 12 hours of hard manual labour. 

My father's world, was shaped by the escalating influence of electricity and small appliances. His typical day was influenced by radio, TV news, car journey and work. The work was indistinguishable from the present day grind. 

Therefore the rate of change in the daily pattern of a modern person's life has plateaued. All the great disruptions to be made by the automation of industry and the miniature section of computers has already occurred. 

Computers are over. Prime social shifters in the near future is communications and biotechnology ubiquitous by wired and wireless, and biological technologies of gene manipulation promise to ratchet up the rate of change again.

I expect minor alterations in our lives in this regard. For one thing the electronic pipe known as a telephone wire which goes to most people homes is a vast developing opportunity and domain. At present that wire can be thought of as one inch wide, but an amazing amount of news and info can be conveyed over it. 

Using the same metaphor any locus in the year 2020 will be over 50 miles wide. Entire realities will be dragged into an office or home on such width for another thing: almost everything will be connected to everything else so every product we make from book, to doll, to truck, to door, will start displaying some intelligence. Your car will know where it is, how fuel efficient it has been, what kind of roads it has been on lately, and when a repair is likely to be needed. 

Amazing dear readers as this post unfolds. All three parts will bring to you a state of technology of the present world.
