In all likelihood you wont give him a second look. That should see him on the road. He is cuddly, balding, but with sensitive mobile features. Professor Nassim Taleb, is without a second thought, one of the greatest finance thinker of our times. An original in every manner, he is to the atom, 'Wall Street's' derivatives trader who ostensibly wound down his very lucrative career to become an academic specialising in the study of ''Randomness and Probability.''
To be precise, Nassim Taleb is a distinguished Professor of risk engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University, but, but he is also -and this takes one hell of a lot of daring in this current age- a genuinely soaring and significant Philosopher. And let me explain, that by this I mean that he is someone who is able to change the way we view the structure of the World through the strength, originality and the veracity of his ideas alone.
To other great thinkers of our time, Nassim Taleb is ''the real thing. A rare happening!'' John Gray, the English Philosopher and the author of 'Straw Dogs' and former Thatcherite Guru turned anti-Enlightenment sceptic, is a big fan of the Professor! Says he, '' Taleb takes the long view, he really understands these very early sceptical thinkers. But most importantly, his work shows the disastrous consequences of what -to the layman- appears as recondite intellectual errors." Taleb rightly understands that what's brought the ''Global Banking System'' to its knees isn't simply greed or wickedness,.......but.......and this is far more frightening..........''INTELLECTUAL HUBRIS''.
