So any true and fair appreciation of the Murdoch family, and hence by extension, the Murdoch business, has to proceed from understanding it as a conventional rather than an exceptional family. Because it is often said that Rupert is, in his heart , a man with a job, rather than a man with a fortune. 

The Murdochs function much more like an every day family of yuppies - with each member competing to outdo the other than it does like a family of SCIONS. 

Rupert, the curiously middle class man is always working  his own mind, drawing sophisticated distinctions between how his family has handled its wealth and how such privilege is handled by others, the Packers (media dynasty) in Australia, for instance. On the BANCROFTS, the disengaged heirs from whom he filched the WALL STREET JOURNAL and who he has nothing but contempt for. 

Just over 2 years ago, James Murdoch was not just on top of his game, but at 36, almost a worshiped figure within the company his family controls. And almost everybody within News Corporation was always eager to tell you in a confidential whisper : "He's the real thing!"

But this was partly a stab at his brother LACHLAN, who was perceived as Softer, less battle ready, less sure, and who left the company after losing an office fire fight. 

James, on the other hand, was the guy clearly styling himself as a mighty and mythical MURDOCH. And his destiny was constantly being re-affirmed, partly because the man who seemed to feel the most of all, this sense of James inevitably and rightness, was his father - and at NEWS CORP, everyone wants to say what they think Rupert wants you to have said.
