Stuart Broad spearheads attack to keep tourists in check

First Test day one (close): West Indies (243-9) v England

Stuart Broad took six wickets against the West Indies to join Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff in the exclusive club of England players whose names adorn both the batting and bowling honours boards at this famous ground.
Broad, who earned his place on the batting board with a century two years ago against Pakistan in the spot-fixing Test, did not do it the easy way, taking his time to reach full bore.
His opening spell, from the Nursery End, lacked both purpose and direction, being too wide of off-stump for the prevailing left-to-right slope.
But he struck decisively after tea, taking five wickets, three of them in the space of 23 balls with the second new ball.

Only Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who will continue this morning unbeaten on 87, was able to resist his new-found vigour.
James Anderson and Tim Bresnan helped him by keeping pressure on from the other end, but Broad’s extra bounce unnerved the tail, who had neither the technique nor the wherewithal to cope.
