A sure sign of summer at Hiram is the beginning of an active season of activities and learning opportunities for kids.
Some new features have been added to this year’s slate of activities, including the Hiram Robotics Academy, an academy for high school juniors and seniors that immerses them in the construction and programming of robots. The Finch robot is already constructed and has several sensors for measuring the world. Students will learn to control this robot to accomplish different challenges.
Participants will also design and build their own Lego Mindstorms NXT robot, attach sensors and motors, and then program their construction. Students will use the Java programming language throughout the experience. HRA will conclude with an opportunity for students to show off their creations to family & friends. HRA is intended for outstanding high school students who
wish to explore programming and robotics and have a strong background in mathematics or technology. All students in high school are eligible to apply, but preference will be given to students who will be juniors/seniors in the fall of 2012. The Academy runs August 6 – 10, 2012 (meets daily 9 – 4 pm).Registration Fee: $100.
But kids and teens don’t have to wait until August for learning fun.
For three Saturdays (July 7, 14 and 21, 2012) from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM on Hiram College’s campus, the Hiram Fine Arts Workshop students will teach printmaking (silkscreen), painting and drawing. Young artists will work with Hiram faculty to expand their artistic abilities, aesthetic judgment and advanced visual skills. The workshop will conclude with an art show for family and friends. The fee to participate is $55 and covers all meals, art supplies and materials.Participants will also design and build their own Lego Mindstorms NXT robot, attach sensors and motors, and then program their construction.
