Eoin Morgan hit a brilliant unbeaten 89 off 63 balls as England beat Australia by 15 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match one-day series.
England used five frontline bowlers to quash Australia’s challenge after Morgan timed his assault to perfection on his home ground, blasting four sixes as England took 72 runs off the last seven overs to lift their total to 272-5.
Opener David Warner scored a half-century to keep Australia on the track but a flurry of wickets in the middle overs broke their momentum. Captain Michael Clarke also struggled to reach his half-century, but the task of scoring the required runs off proper bowlers proved too much for them despite James Anderson struggling with a groin injury.
Australia's Shane Watson was used as their fifth bowler and the 65 runs he conceded from 10 overs were the worst figures of the match. Score Card
