"NIGERIAN WOMEN ARE TOP USERS OF
BLEACHING CREAMS-WHO"

By Abel Abel Inis

A World Health Organisation report on the dangers of mercury in skin lightening soaps and creams has revealed that over 77% of Nigerians use such products on a daily basis. The report published by the organisation further shows that it is followed closely by Togo with 59%, South Africa 35% and Mali 25%. Mercury poisoning leads to extreme fatigue, muscle aches and weakness, skin rashes, sores in the mouth, mood changes, memory loss, high blood pressure and weight loss. High exposure to mercury can damage the gastrointestinal track, nervous system and kidneys. Millions of Nigerians expose themselves to these health risks without knowing it. This is even worse for women as it can be passed down to their children.
