Professor Matthew Ferrence Selected for Prestigious Bread Loaf Conference

Matthew Ferrence, assistant professor of English at Allegheny College, has been selected to participate in the Bread Loaf writers’ conference , the oldest and one of the most competitive and prestigious writers’ conferences in the country. The conference convenes each August at the Bread Loaf campus of Middlebury College.

Founded in 1926, Bread Loaf brings together established and young writers for 10 days of workshops, readings and on-on-one meetings with agents and publishers. Among its instructors and attendees have been Robert Frost, Willa Cather, Mark Doty, Julia Alvarez, Barry Lopez, Toni Morrison and Carolyn Forché.

Matthew Ferrence joined Allegheny’s faculty in 2011 and teaches in the college’s creative writing program. He holds a B.A. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, an M.F.A. from the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. from West Virginia University. His essays have appeared in several journals, including Blue Mesa Review, Crab Orchard Review, Concho Creek Review and Puckerbrush Review.

His essay “Rules of the Game” was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2009 and the Dzanc Books Best of the Web Prize in 2010.
