Jan Vertonghen set to complete Tottenham move from Ajax

Tottenham Hotspur are close to signing defender Jan Vertonghen after agreeing a fee with Ajax.

Belgium international Vertonghen, 25, will undergo a medical with a view to becoming Andre Villas-Boas's second signing after Gylfi Sigurdsson.

"We're delighted to announce we have reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Jan Vertonghen, subject to a medical," a Tottenham statement read.

Spurs had seen two bids rejected as Ajax wanted £12m for the centre-half.

But Tottenham have refused to disclose how much they have agreed to pay Ajax for Vertonghen, who has a year left on his contract in Amsterdam.

The 2011-12 Dutch Player of the Year will offer Villas-Boas more defensive options with Ledley King's future still uncertain and Ryan Nelsen having moved to QPR.

Spurs have been tracking the Belgium defender, who helped Ajax claim their second successive Eredivisie title, since last season.

He has made 220 appearances for the Dutch giants and scored 10 times in 37 games last season on the way to becoming their Player of the Year.   (BBC.co.uk)
