John Terry was forced to mount an unfamiliar defence on Tuesday as he took to the stand at Westminster Magistrates’ Court accused of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand.
The court heard how the former England captain had led the line more than 500 times for Chelsea and on 77 occasions for his country but, for a man who has “spent his life on the football” pitch, his current task is a long way from his comfort zone.
In dramatic exchanges with Duncan Penny, prosecuting, Terry was repeatedly forced to deny he had lost his composure in the moments that led up to him calling Queens Park Rangers’s Anton Ferdinand a “black c---.”
Terry does not deny he used the term, which was captured on camera and broadcast to millions in nine-man Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat at Loftus Road last October. But he insists Ferdinand had used those words first and that he was merely repeating them back to the QPR defender.
Terry was shown footage of the incidents from the match in which an appeal he made for a penalty was overruled and he was booked after clashes with Ferdinand and the QPR goalkeeper, Paddy Kenny.
He admitted having accused Ferdinand of being a cheat, of having bad breath and also admitted he had gestured at Kenny in a way that was intended to indicate that the goalkeeper is fat.
