It takes little to keep children engaged and happy

It had been a long time since we actually saw children compete for a few pieces of candy. The prizes made available in various contests and games have tried to outdo each other in sophistication and value.

Seeing a simple get together of children on board a 2GO vessel on a recent trip called to mind the pristine days of childhood when iPods and PSPs were not even a figment of any inventor’s imagination. And the object of games and contests was simply to have fun.

The comfortable voyage on Saint Michael the Archangel, 2GO’s flagship vessel that rivals cruise liners, was rendered even more exciting for adults and kids with a Children’s Hour staged right at the center of the activity area.

There are a lot of activities on offer during each 2GO voyage, besides the non-stop airing of movies. We usually have a good laugh with the passengers during karaoke sessions and comedy nights.

Anak TV youth volunteers get a kick out of shooting the breeze or trying out the disco. Passengers seeking nothing but relaxation will be gratified by the subtle lullaby given free by sea travel.

The children’s games brought to mind how little it takes to make one child happy. For one delightful hour, Food and Beverage head Kit doubled as emcee and party host, role-playing as though he was both father and clown, dispensing pieces of candy to winners in a variety of parlor games.

Suddenly, the most mundane games like Trip to Jerusalem and Statue Dance became even more thrilling than Pacquiao’s fights.

The magical hour with children also demonstrated how corruption rears its ugly head right in the family setting. Overly impartial and excited parents literally shoved their wards with the object sought during the Bring Me game. It was as though the few pieces of candy were the most desirable prizes on earth for them. Seeing their children win over other kids was a priceless reward.

By and large, those were golden moments of sheer, unadulterated joy which one cannot obtain by watching a variety show with skimpily-clad girls, a brawl-marred basketball match or a bawdy comedy act.

Whether the kids had more fun than the adults is debatable.
