Kids who read books outside class achieve better results in school, according to research. |
(U.K) Text messages are the most common information children in the UK read outside of class, the latest study reveals. More than a fifth of kids reportedly never read in their own time.
The research by the National Literacy Trust was based on a study of over 21,000 children, The Guardian reported.
In 2005, when the survey was launched, four in ten children confirmed that reading was part of their daily routine. The proportion has dropped to around three in ten.
The number of children reading comics and magazines also plummeted from over three-quarters in 2005 to 57% last year.
Experts say, children stopped reading for fun after their leisure time became flooded with more and more school activities.
According to the recent study, those who read books outside class achieve better results in school.
The research has also revealed that the majority of youngsters opted for watching their favorite programs on TV when they had to choose between television and reading.
"The fact that children are reading less than in 2005 signals a worrying shift in young people's literacy habits,” The National Literacy Trust's director Jonathan Douglas told The Guardian.
