Brooklyn High School Preps Students for Tech Jobs

Students use computers even in English class at the Pathways in
Technology Early College High School, also known as P-Tech.

Pathways in Technology Early College High School in Crown Heights, Brooklyn is a new 6-year school that teaches students skills for the technology industry. The curriculum at P-Tech, as it is called, combines aspects of both high school and college and is expecting its first matriculating students in 2017. Students will graduate with associates degrees in subjects like applied science or electromechanical engineering technology, according to The New York Times.

NY plans to open two more schools like P-Tech in the next two years with a focus on other growing industries. P-Tech is actually located in Paul Robeson High School, which is being closed down because of bad performance. The days are split into ten periods that span topics from English to technology to business. Ideally, students will leave prepared for entry-level jobs in the technology field. In fact, certain I.B.M. employees were analyzed to determine exactly what skills students would need. Students are also paired with a mentor at the company and make trips to I.B.M. locations to learn about computers. Additionally, P-Tech’s 18 teachers were all trained by I.B.M.
