''NOBEL SPIRIT''
The most prestigious awards in the world were founded by by a forefather of Weapons of Mass Destruction.
The son of a weapons manufacturer, Stockholm-born Alfred Nobel -1833-1896- studied under Ascanio Sobrero, experimenting on the young chemist's invention: nitroglycerine. After several explosive failures, one of which killed his brother Emil, Nobel invented the ''blasting cap'' detonator in 1865, heralding a new era in weaponry.
Nobel grew rich from explosives patents -including dynamite- and the oil exploration of his brothers, Robert and Ludvig. After the death of the latter in 1888, a French paper mistakenly ran an obituary for Alfred: ''The merchant of death is dead.'' This premature epitaph is said to have inspired Nobel's posthumous bequeathing of his wealth to the creation of awards, to be bestowed upon those who ''conferred the greatest benefit on mankind'' in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace.
The Nobel Prizes -a medal, a diploma and a cheque for around £750,000- are presented each year by King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden on 10 December each year, the anniversary of Nobel's death.
The Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo, the Literature prize by the Swedish Academy in Stockholm, the Physics and Chemistry Prizes by the Royal Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, and the Medicine or Physiology Prize by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. These organizations accept nominations from prominent scientists worldwide, their own members and previous Nobel Laureates.
Tickets for the Nobel Banquet that follows the ceremony are the most sought after in Sweden, especially after Princess Madeleine nearly fell out of her ballgown at the 2002 ceremony. The feast itself is a magnificent exercise in culinary logistics. While the menu is composed specifically for the banquet, you can try any of the previous years feasts at head chef Ulf Ostenius's Stockholm restaurant.
In 1903, Two years after the inaugural awards, Nobel Prize received huge global media attention when Pierre and Marie Curie were awarded the Prizes for their work on Radiation.
But in 1905 the accusations of nepotism grew rife when Bertha Von Suttner, Nobel's former secretary, household supervisor and close friend during the 1860's, was awarded the Peace Prize for her involvement in the International peace movement.
