In Maryland, Ex Postal Worker Convicted of Disability Fraud

The authorities of the state announced earlier in the week, that a federal jury convicted Darlene M. Altvater who is 48 years old of Mechanicsville, Maryland. According to all of the evidence that was presented during the five day trial, she was employed through the US Postal Service as one of the rural carriers at the Mechanicsville Post Office in St. Mary’s County.

She had an on the job injury to her neck and head, and began to receive the federal workers compensation benefits in 2001. The evidence however, showed that from January 2005 to December 2011, while she continued receiving the workers comp due to her disability, she also was operating a salon, day spa, and fitness center in Leonardown. She then moved on to open and operate in California as well. Additional details were given during the trial, and she is now faced with a maximum sentence of five years in prison with three years of suspended release, and a fine of $250,000 for each of the two counts of false statements.
