An American student has been arrested at Brisbane airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle two kilograms of speed into Australia.
The 23-year-old woman was stopped by Customs and Border Protection officers after arriving on a flight from Papua New Guinea on Friday.
Officers became suspicious about the weight of the woman's bag after airport X-rays revealed inconsistencies in the bag lining, Customs and Border Protection said today.
A white substance was found in the bag and further tests indicated the presence of methamphetamine, also known as speed.
Australian Federal Police arrested the woman on charges including importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment or an $825,000 fine.
